Welcome To

Welcome to Westgate Pottery located in the market town of Guisborough. It lies north of the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors National Park and just 5 miles from Roseberry Topping.

Hello, my name is Jason and I am the proud owner of Westgate Pottery. I am married to Mel and have been for the past 26 years and we have two children Joseph 23 and Isabel 19.

The pottery opened its doors in March 2022 and is located above my coffee shop, No30 Westgate. No30 has been serving coffee, lunchtime specials, cakes and deli produce to the residents of Guisborough for the last 8 years and more recently my ceramics.

Prior to opening No30 I worked for the same company for 28 years and was in management for the majority of those years.

Pottery has been a passion of mine for a long time. Attending classes until lockdown came along and changed everything. No30 closed and I took a part-time job. Although my little job filled part of my week I missed making pottery and playing with clay. That really is where it all started!

Living in an old terraced house I converted an old outhouse into a pottery studio and ordered a wheel and kiln, tools, clay and glaze off the internet. Whilst patiently waiting to reopen No30 I spent my spare time making pots, cups, teapots and many other ceramic items which once finished I would transport to the shop, whilst checking on it, and display ready for the day we could open.

When the news I had been waiting for finally arrived and No30 could be reopened my life changed again. At first, I kept my part-time job and with the help of staff, I ran the shop and worked but as restrictions eased and life started to resemble some sort of normality I gave up my little job. I was back at No30 full time which I absolutely love but I missed having as much time to make my pottery.

As I started to sell my ceramics in No30 customers asked if I had thought about giving lessons in my little studio at home. Although this seemed like a great idea I gave a friend some lessons and found the space was too small and it really wasn’t practical.

I then had the idea to move my studio to the space above my shop which was empty. It made perfect sense as I could spend my time between the pottery and my coffee shop. I now spend two days a week sharing my knowledge with people who come along to use the pottery space, materials and equipment. I also offer workshops making a particular item such as the Highland cow which has been very popular. I spend two days making my own ceramics to sell and I am normally in No30 one day a week and still bake and make all of the lunchtime food myself before I go up to the pottery.

Life is very busy and I have never been happier.

Tomorrow we are parting with our little campervan Chuggs 😢.
Some of you may remember the watercolour I did of it earlier this year.
It’s brought us so much joy and taken us to places we never would have visited but over the last couple of years it’s just sat outside and barely gone anywhere as we just don’t seem to have as much spare time.
So we’ve decided to let it go and bring someone else some joy but I will look at my little painting and remember all the happy memories it brought us 🤍

Many of you who call into the shop ask me if I make the ceramics along with Jason. The answer sadly is no. This was me attempting to throw on the wheel in 2022 not long after we opened the Pottery Studio.

After two hours of Jason patiently trying to teach me we fell out 🤷‍♀️😂 and I haven’t been on the wheel since because I just don’t think we’re compatible 😆.

These pots, glazed and ready for their final firing, were made during wheel tasters and everyone who comes along manages to produce something … this is quite an achievement if you’ve no previous experience of creating from a piece of clay spinning around at speed on a wheel in front of you 🤍
